You wouldn’t even think how many popular breeds the standard allows the white colour for!
Let’s not waste time, let’s see – without aiming for completeness – in which popular cat breeds we can encounter the white colour.
The British Shorthair is a compact, balanced, and powerfully built cat. Their torso is long, muscular, and strong, their coat – if white – is always pure white, without a yellowish hue. Their eyes can shine in wonderful deep sapphire blue, gold or copper shades. This breed reaches full maturity in 3–5 years. Typically, they become a balanced, friendly, and calm companion. Due to their gentleness and easy-going nature, they may be ideal for most homes.
The Scottish Fold breed originated as a spontaneous mutation on a Scottish farm. All folded-ear cats can be traced back to Susie, the first Scottish Fold, discovered by the breed’s founders, William and Mary Ross. The breed was later refined using British Shorthairs and domestic cats. The breed is available in both long and short hair, and in various colour variations. Affectionate and calm, their personality is just as appealing as their unique appearance. Many people are reminded of owls because of their tiny ears and huge round eyes, which enchant anyone instantly. If you would like a cat like this, it is important to know that the folded ear can unfortunately also result in serious illness, so it is especially important to find a reliable breeder.
The Persian cat’s flowing, lush, silky fur has symbolised luxury in the feline world for more than 100 years. However, it’s not just the beauty of the coat that matters in their case – symmetry and refinement are also truly important. The breed’s eyes, head, face, body, and even the ear tips must all give a rounded impression. Their large, round eyes must be placed exactly in the centre of the face, giving the cats the expression of being “the embodiment of kindness”. The long, thick, shiny, pure white coat softens the breed’s lines even more and emphasises the rounded appearance. The Persian – this sensitive, quiet, and kind creature – is available in numerous colour variations besides white.
The Maine Coon is perhaps one of the most popular breeds; born in America, and the largest of all pedigree cats. With a documented history going back to the 1850s, this shaggy, supersized cat is bred and shown at exhibitions worldwide. Friendly, sweet-natured and easy to train, they also quickly adapt to all kinds of environments. Several myths and legends have arisen to explain the Maine Coon’s longer fur. One says that Marie Antoinette’s Turkish Angoras escaped into the forests of Maine; another claims that a sea captain named Coon, who liked cats, had a colony of long-haired cats living on his ship. And that’s not even all of them!
The Turkish Angora’s elegant coat and intelligent, beautiful gaze instantly touch the soul. This rare and beautiful cat – considered a national treasure in their homeland – is the oldest known long-haired breed and is likely the ancestor of other long-haired breeds. The Turkish Angora was domesticated as early as the 17th century around Ankara. Despite their slim and elegant physique, this breed is quite muscular, with a medium build; their weight ranges between approximately 3–5 kg. Their long coat requires quite a lot of grooming. But don’t let the coat scare you off – the Angora cat is playful, affectionate, and loyal, the perfect companion.
The Norwegian Forest Cat is a strongly built specimen, with characteristic double coat and easily recognisable body type. Their strikingly thick coat and impressive mane may catch our attention at first, but their true charm comes from their captivating gaze and kind, triangular-shaped head. No wonder this majestic cat has a history of several thousand years, and has lived alongside humanity for centuries. Indoors, they are a charming pet, but once outside, they cannot resist their instincts. They are gifted with fantastic hunting skills. They have perfectly adapted to harsh climatic conditions, however, they are a very slow-developing breed, reaching their full size around the age of five. Quiet, and fond of human company, yet reserved with strangers.
