First and foremost, it’s important to clarify that cats are obligate carnivores. This means they derive all the nutrients they need from meat and do not require fruits in their diet. However, some fruits can be offered in moderation as an occasional treat to satisfy their curiosity or add variety to their diet. The key is moderation. Let’s see which fruits are safe for cats to eat.

Certain fruits can be given to cats in moderation

Before you give fruit to your cat

Cats are currently believed to be the only mammals that do not have a taste for sweetness. Additionally, fruits contain natural sugars, which are not necessary for a balanced feline diet. Overfeeding fruits can lead to obesity, which is a risk factor for many diseases. Therefore, only offer small pieces of fruit occasionally, as they increase daily calorie intake without providing essential nutrients.

While we will detail the fruits safe for cats below, it’s always best to consult with your veterinarian. They know your cat’s health better and can give personalized advice on whether these fruits are suitable for your cat.

1.) Blueberry

If you want to offer your cat fruit, blueberries are one of the best options. They are low in calories and contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can be beneficial for cats. Make sure to wash them and remove any stems. Don’t be surprised if your cat prefers to play with them rather than eat them.

Always wash the fruits and remove stems and leaves before offering them to your cat. It’s even better to cut them into smaller pieces.

2.) Strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, cranberry

These berries are also safe for cats if washed thoroughly and served without stems or leaves. Cut them into small pieces before offering them to your cat.

3.) Apple, pear

Apples and pears are generally safe but only if certain precautions are taken. Never give the seeds to your cat, as they contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide when ingested. It is harmful in large quantities and can cause stomach pain or sickness even in small amounts. Remove the core and peel the fruit, and serve in small pieces.

4.) Apricot, peach, nectarine

Remove the stems and peel the fruits before cutting them into small pieces. Never give the pits to your cat, as they also contain amygdalin, which is harmful to their health.

There are even cats that help with the harvest

5.) Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe can be beneficial for cats due to its vitamin and fiber content. Peel it, remove the seeds, cut it into small pieces, and offer a few bits to your cat occasionally.

6.) Watermelon

A couple of chilled watermelon cubes can be a refreshing treat in warm weather. Serve it without the rind or seeds, in small pieces.

7.) Banana

Bananas can be given in small amounts without the peel. They are high in calories, so moderation is especially important.

8.) Mango

Mango, when peeled and cut into small cubes, can be safely given to cats in moderation.

9.) Pineapple

Fresh pineapple, peeled and cut into small pieces, is safe for cats. Avoid canned pineapple, which is usually stored in sugary syrup.

10.) Kiwi

Although kiwi can theoretically be given to cats, many may have trouble digesting it due to its high fiber content. Additionally, it is often sour.

Avocados are severely toxic to cats. Keep all parts away from them!

Never give these fruits to your cat!

Citrus fruits contain oils that irritate the feline digestive system.

Avocado contains persin, a fungicidal toxin in its leaves, skin, stems, and flesh which is harmful to cats. Even discarded avocado parts in the trash can pose a risk if your cat gets to them.

Grapes and raisins are toxic to cats, causing vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially serious kidney damage.
