Whiskers play a crucial role in a cat’s life: they use them to scan their environment, gathering valuable information. One of these functions is to measure width. A cat’s whiskers are usually as wide as the cat itself. So if they can touch the edges with their whiskers, they can pass through.

However, if the animal has several extra pounds, its broad dimensions no longer match the measure (since whiskers shed, but their length doesn’t increase).
