Despite Christmas and the preceding preparations being perhaps the most beautiful time of the year, it can be quite stressful not only for us but also for our cats. Just think about all the changes; these can be a source of stress. So, try to do everything you can to make this wonderful time rich in experiences for your cat as well.
It’s definitely worth following the tips below to ensure a smooth holiday season with your furry friend. Here are the tips to avoid a stressed cat at the Christmas period.
When discussing holidays, it’s essential to make the most dangerous factor safe — the Christmas tree. First and foremost, place the tree in a secure location where the cat cannot knock it over because one thing is certain: it will try. Make sure the tree has a solid base and does not sway. It may be useful to tie it to a sturdy, immovable piece of furniture or the ceiling, so the cat is less likely to move the tree. Additionally, place fragile ornaments higher up, as there’s a high chance the cat might knock them over if they are lower. It’s even more practical to choose plastic ornaments that are shatterproof and secure them with string rather than hooks. Also, be particularly mindful of artificial snow, which may look great on the tree but can be toxic to your pet.
It’s also crucial not to leave wires freely accessible, as the cat may easily chew on them. Therefore, it’s advisable to fence or hide them to prevent your cat from reaching them.
Few people know that pine can be toxic to cats, and its consumption can often cause severe stomach issues and constipation. Moreover, the water under the tree can be poisonous too, so consider using an artificial tree. Additionally, traditional Christmas plants like poinsettias or holly can also be hazardous for your pet, so it’s best to avoid them.
If you have many guests during the holidays, it might be a good idea to give your cat the freedom to decide whether it wants to interact with them. Clarify this with the guests beforehand, so they don’t pet or bother the cat without permission. Let the cat determine with whom it wants to interact.
It’s also advisable to create a safe place for your cat during this time, where it can retreat from people. This can be crucial because if the cat feels stressed in its environment, it will seek refuge in its little retreat, free from the hustle and bustle, to rest and recover. It’s recommended to place food, water, and a litter box in this area so that everything your cat needs is readily available until it feels recharged enough to return.
Often, stress arises from the feeling of being ignored or boredom. Naturally, this can be quite stressful for the cat, as it may feel less important than other things. However, by communicating to the cat that it is valued and spending quality time with it, you can likely reduce its stress. So, even in the busiest times, allocate some time to play and have fun with your cat.
The importance of maintaining predictability and daily routines cannot be stressed enough. Cats can be significantly disturbed if their daily routine is disrupted, and certain activities are skipped. To avoid this, it’s essential to stick to your cat’s routine, so it doesn’t stress over missed feeding or delayed playtime. Additionally, not only maintain the daily routine but also spend quality time together. Lack of quality time may make your pet feel neglected, leading to frustration.
Finally, we’ll sneak in an additional tip. To help your cat cope with changes, it might be worthwhile to inspire them with some treats. This will undoubtedly help them handle the inconveniences of the holidays better, and, last but not least, they will feel that this is a truly special time for them too.
