Although cats do not shed tears when they cry out of sadness, this does not stop them from loudly expressing their sorrow or pain. According to a cat behavior expert, here’s how we can recognize that a cat is truly crying.

Cats Cry Differently from Humans

Linda Hall, a cat behavior consultant, believes that while cats do not tear up, they can cry. If they feel emotional or physical pain, their behavior changes, and they may make sounds similar to crying. This type of vocalization can be genuine, loud crying. It usually lasts longer and is much rarer than meowing. According to the cat behavior researcher, if our cat is sad, we might notice the following:

  • increased vocalization;
  • trembling;
  • hiding;
  • decreased appetite;
  • reduced activity and increased sleeping time;
  • changes in elimination habits;
  • aggression.

Behavioral changes can indicate emotional or physical distress. However, it is important to know that if their eyes are tearing up, it does not mean they are in pain. Tears usually indicate health issues such as conjunctivitis, a blocked tear duct, or other eye infections. In such cases, the best thing we can do is schedule an appointment with the veterinarian.

It’s not sadness that brings tears to your cat’s eyes!

What Does It Mean If Your Cat Cries?

Meowing is not the primary mode of communication among cats. They also communicate with scents, body language, and touch. If your cat cries and meows, it wants to convey that something is wrong. The causes could be:

  • Anxiety: Separation, changes in routine, the introduction of a new pet, or moving can trigger anxiety.
  • Grief: Cats form deep bonds with both their human and animal companions. If you recently lost a family member, the cat might also grieve, feel sadness, and miss its former friend.
  • Cognitive Disease: Feline cognitive diseases can be similar to human dementia. This typically affects cats aged 10 years or older. It becomes particularly noticeable at night, as cats get confused in the dark and might cry for help. For demented, disoriented cats, the expert suggests using night lights to help them navigate, reducing nighttime crying.
Old cats can be in pain, and they show it
  • Arthritis: It is estimated that more than 95% of cats over 10 years old suffer from arthritis. So, if you have an older cat, crying might indicate pain. Signs of feline arthritis include avoiding stairs, difficulty jumping, and other changes in movement.

Any sudden change in our pet’s behavior should make us wonder what might be behind it. In such cases, the expert suggests visiting the veterinarian for an examination to rule out hidden health problems. Older, hearing-impaired cats might also cry more than usual, and cats with kidney or heart disease, or those living with high blood pressure, are known to be vocal.

Some cats have a special need for music

How to Help Your Cat Feel Better If It’s Sad

“The first step is always the veterinarian, who will rule out underlying health issues,” says Hall. After that, she advises owners to focus on surrounding their cat with things they love: quality time, stimulating toys, and even treats.

“Spend a lot of time with your cat. If you have to be away, ask a friend, relative, or sitter to visit them,” Hall suggests. “Try to maintain normal routines as much as possible.”

Music can also be a great solution if your cat is sad. Hearing is typically the sense through which our pets can be reassured that they are safe. Alongside soothing sounds, familiar scents can also provide support. Cats identify people and other animals around them through scent markers. It can help if they can smell a beloved person’s scent on a blanket or clothing.
