If a cat have the opportunity, like to wanders. This is due to its natural hunting instinct. But should you allow it, even though there are many dangers that can threaten it during such an adventure? We followed up on the question below.

Why do cats go out at night?

According to research from Shiloh Veterinary Hospital, the reason cats like to roam so much is based on their genetics. And why they do this in the dark is because they are most active in the early evening and dawn. Genetically, this is when their hunting instinct is strongest, and during these times of the day they have the greatest chance of meeting potential prey. Thus, the reason for wandering in the morning is the hunting instinct. In the case of non-sterilized cats, mating can also play a significant role in getting them on the road, so it is definitely worth neutering your pet.

What do they do while roaming?

In a study conducted by the University of Georgia, they collected video footage of more than 50 cats to see what they do, where they go and what they encounter at night. The researchers found that half of the individuals studied spent their time hunting wild animals such as lizards, frogs and mice. While other cats explored a lot, they didn’t go far from home. Most cats tend to wander in their own neighborhood, on well-known roads.

Is wandering dangerous?

Despite the fact that cats instinctively like to roam, in many cases this carries a very serious danger. The average lifespan of free-range cats is 3-5 years, compared to 10-16 years for indoor cats. Below, we have collected what dangers your pet may encounter when wandering the streets.

Should it be allowed?

Even though your cat likes to roam around at night, it is still very important to be aware that it is not safe to do so for the reasons mentioned above. It endangers not only their own health but also the health of other animals. Although this is a natural instinct for them and they go home without any harm in a significant percentage of cases, you should not let your pet wander. It is safer to leave it in outside under your supervision on a closed terrace or in the garden, but it is not recommended to let it roam alone. There are many accidents that can even cost their life.
