Many cat owners swear that the personality traits of calico cats are unmistakable compared to other cats. They are known for having strong, dramatic personalities. In fact, some even say that if you're looking for a truly talented mouser, a calico is the way to go!
We’ll now try to uncover whether these statements and beliefs about calico cats have any basis in reality. Stay tuned!
The calico cat is not a separate breed; the name refers to the coat pattern. However, those who have interacted with them are convinced that their personalities are undeniably intense and fiery. They tend to be more willful and temperamental than cats of other color combinations. And to show that we’re not just making this up, we’ve done some research on the subject. Researchers at the University of California conducted a survey of more than 1,200 cats, which showed a link between a cat’s coat color pattern and potential aggressive behavior. The calico pattern, in particular, has been noted as one that can challenge owners, especially during vet visits!
Some breeders who have produced the pattern within officially recognized breeds have also observed this personality difference. Interestingly, calicos are almost always female. Scientists estimate that only 1 in 3,000 calico kittens is male, because while females have two X chromosomes, males have one X and one Y. And to form the calico pattern, two X chromosomes are required. We firmly reject the idea that capricious behavior is simply tied to being female!
We can honestly say that the information we’ve just uncovered only makes us more curious and enthusiastic. After all, life is a thousand times more fun with a cat and a little extra spice never hurts! It seems we’re not the only ones who feel this way. In many cultures, cats are seen as symbols of good luck. In Ireland, for example, there are legends tied to their name. One says that rubbing a calico’s tail on a wart will make it disappear.
You’ve probably heard of the Japanese waving cat – and if the rumors are true, even Maneki was modeled after a calico. Since calicos were considered quite rare, Japanese sailors went to great lengths to bring one along on their voyages. They believed the calico would guarantee a safe journey and calm any angry spirits.
We still remember how our grandparents often talked about always trying to get a calico cat for the house, believing they were the most efficient and skilled hunters. Although research has not yet proven this to be true, we have a theory. Given their passionate nature and reputation for being highly independent, even within the cat world, they may indeed be more talented at hunting.
Take, for example, Vesper at the Lindores Abbey Distillery in Scotland. This calico lady inspects the entire brewery every night and brings 4-5 hauls to her owners each day
