They are certainly the hairiest members of the family, but that doesn't mean they don't feel the cold. And because they can't tell when they're cold, we have to take our cues from them.

Here’s how you can tell your cat might need warm clothes or a cosy corner next to the radiator.

There is no question that hairless cats need to be dressed warmly in winter, but they are not the only ones!

Signs that your cat needs warm clothes

Our bodies react to cold by diverting circulation from our skin to our internal organs. The result is that our extremities, such as our ears and feet, become cold. This is also true for our pets. If your cat’s ears, paws or nose feel particularly cold, he may need something to keep him warm.

When cats or dogs are comfortable and warm, they will stretch out completely on the floor or even lie on their backs, exposing their tummies. However, if they are even slightly cold, they curl up and tuck their legs in to keep warm. Cats even wrap their tails around their bodies like a scarf! Among both dogs and cats, some have double layers of fur. These breeds tolerate the cold much better. Of course, the length of the coat can also be a guide, especially in cats. In the case of dogs, long coats can be deceptive, as they are not always double-layered and therefore not necessarily particularly warm. And last but not least, it may come as a surprise, but body conformation also contributes to sensitivity to cold. The smaller and thinner the animal, the harder it is to retain heat. If you think about it, this is why you hardly ever see really small animals in Antarctica or the Arctic.

Devon rexes, for example, have minimal undercoat, so they can also be colder

Based on the above, you will be able to decide if your cat needs a sweater for the cooler months. A cat suit is a practical accessory that is a necessity in some cases. Remember, our pets live a completely different lifestyle to us, so their needs may change!

And what about exercise in clothes?

If any more intense exercise is done as a toy, be sure to remove the clothing from the cat! They can cause overheating and even heat stress, even in the middle of winter. Keeping cats’ bodies warm in cold weather consumes huge amounts of energy, especially for outdoor or outdoor animals. And like ours, it puts a considerable strain on their immune systems. Supplementing with the right mix of protein, zinc, vitamins B and C can also help our animals avoid winter illnesses. These nutrients also help to preserve their winter coat. Be sure to check with your vet whether you should give this to your cat and, if so, which product might be an ideal choice.
