When the cat's tail starts to vibrate, many owners don't know what to make of it, even though it is an important part of the animal's body language.
While for humans, the eyes are often considered the window to the soul, in cats, the tail serves a similar role. By paying attention to the signals it gives, you can better understand what’s going on in your pet’s mind. Let’s see what it means when a cat’s tail noticeably shaking
According to veterinarian Dr. Andrea Bodó, a cat can express a wide range of emotions through its tail. However, to accurately interpret these signals, it’s essential to consider the overall context, including the specific situation and other elements of body language, such as eye contact and posture.
If a cat approaches with an upright, quivering tail, it typically indicates excitement. This excitement could be directed at its owner, another cat, or even the anticipation of an upcoming meal.
“It’s worth knowing that in intact male cats, an upright, fully quivering tail can precede spraying, which is used for marking territory,” the veterinarian warned. She added, “In female cats in heat, it is typical for them to hold their tails to the side as a signal of readiness for mating.”
In contrast, a vertically upright, puffed-up tail—especially if the cat arches its back at the same time—can signal fear or aggression. On the other hand, a tail that simply stands upright is often a greeting or a sign of interest.
What About Tail Wagging? When a cat wags its tail, the meaning depends on the intensity of the movement. This action can indicate nervousness, aggression, or even an intention to attack.
A cat doesn’t only communicate by quivering, puffing up, or wagging its tail. When it slaps its tail against the ground or makes sweeping motions, experts say the cat might be irritated, annoyed, or frightened (except during play or hunting, when such movements likely indicate excitement). If the cat tucks its tail between its legs, it could be a sign of fear or pain.
When a cat’s tail is shaped like a question mark, it’s often a sign of curiosity or interest. This might be your cat’s way of signaling that it wants to play. If your pet wraps its tail around your legs, it’s giving you a warm and friendly greeting.
