There’s nothing quite like the crisp autumn breeze, the sight of golden leaves, and the smell of baked treats wafting from the kitchen. However, despite its charm, autumn brings various risks, especially for our furry friends. Here's a guide to the important things you should keep in mind during this season to keep your cat safe and happy.

Even indoor cats face unique challenges and dangers during autumn. To help you prepare, we’ve compiled a list of critical points to protect your pet from seasonal hazards.

Autumn Dangers for Cats

1.) Don’t Significantly Increase Your Cat’s Food Intake

Sadly, the number of overweight pets continues to grow, primarily because they consume more food than they burn off. Overfeeding is particularly dangerous as it raises the risk of health issues, including heart problems.

In autumn, pet owners often pay less attention to proper feeding routines, which can lead to overfeeding. This tendency is partly instinctive—humans themselves eat more during cooler months. Decades ago, veterinarians even recommended increasing calorie intake in colder weather. However, this isn’t necessary for indoor cats, as they don’t experience the outdoor chill and typically receive sufficient nutrition year-round.

2.) Watch Out for School Supplies

Autumn means back-to-school season, and with it comes potential hazards for your cat. Items like glue, pencils, erasers, paints, and other craft materials can cause stomach upset or even blockages if ingested. Glue in particular can cause severe gastrointestinal obstructions that may require surgery.

To keep your pet safe, store school supplies out of reach. The same precautions apply during fall cleaning or home renovations, when dangerous materials like paints or solvents might be left accessible.

3.) Monitor Access to Human Foods

Keep desserts, candies, fatty meats, bones, sauces, calorie-rich casseroles, and seasoned ribs far from your cat’s reach. Additionally, remember that onions and garlic are highly toxic to cats. Always secure food to prevent accidental snacking.

4.) Be Mindful of Heating

One of the greatest risks for pets during the autumn and winter months is the start of heating season. Dry air can lead to respiratory issues like coughing, and direct contact with heaters or stoves can result in burns.

To prevent accidents, block your cat’s access to heaters or radiators and maintain a comfortable indoor temperature of around 22–25°C.
