Are you looking for a healthy snack for your cat? Fortunately, you don't have to go much further than your own fridge or pantry. Of course, this should also be handled with care, as food that is beneficial and delicious for most people can be dangerous for your cat. Today's article will help you become a little more creative when it comes to feeding your pet.
In the case of kitties, we specifically recommend more frequent food changes and the introduction of more special additional snacks, because cats clearly require variety in this area, much more than dogs. Of course, make sure that these delicious snacks from the fridge are not added plus to their daily portion, but simply replace a meal with them, or halve the portion and supplement it with the foods listed below. This way you can be sure that you don’t have to put the cat on a diet later because it has become overweight. Human food can be safe and exciting for cats at the same time.
This orange-coloured meat is a source of protein and Omega-3, and it’s also tasty. We say from experience that our furry friends usually like it. Raw feeding is used by many people, in our opinion there are a little more risks than benefits. Therefore, also in the case of salmon, make sure that you serve it to your pet fried or steamed, without any spices.
If you think it likes it and you don’t want to bother with baking salmon, freeze-dried salmon cat treats can also be a great choice.
It is the archenemy of children, along with broccoli and brussels sprouts. These green little leaves are packed with vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins A, C and K, iron and calcium. However, if you know your cat has calcium oxalate bladder stones, be sure to avoid spinach.
Many cat foods already contain spinach, so it’s worth checking the store shelves if your cat likes it. We recommend it mostly steamed, not raw.
Since cats are carnivores, they require a diet that contains a lot of meat, unlike omnivorous dogs. Cats cannot efficiently digest fibrous foods, so we prefer to avoid them. However, we cannot go wrong with good old chicken or turkey meat.
Remove the skin and you can prepare it by frying it in very little fat, boiling it or even in an air fry it.
High in potassium and soluble fiber, bananas can also be a safe snack for your pet. Although it is a healthy delicacy, be aware that it also has a higher calorie content, so you should definitely keep the measure in mind.
Oatmeal is a great source of energy and B vitamins, which is also an ingredient that you can find more and more high-quality foods. However, just because oatmeal is safe for cats, not all of them love it. For this reason, it is worth introducing this ingredient slowly. Or not forcing it at all, if you notice that your cat is not eating enough of it.
It’s very easy to prepare, just like cooking regular porridge. You can even make a larger quantity at once, it will last for several days in the fridge. The bottom line is, we do not recommend adding milk or other flavorings. Boil with water, then mix with dry or canned food. The amount and the right combination will be determined by your kitty’s taste. If you like, you can even experiment with homemade oat snacks.
Pumpkin is not only low in calories and fiber, but it can also be a great solution for cats with digestive problems. If you make puree from the pumpkin, you can even freeze it, so you can pamper your pet with it not only in autumn.
Our grandparents wisely said a long time ago that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Although cats don’t need an apple a day, and get rid of the skin before giving it to them, it can be a super source of vitamins for them. You can even grate it and serve it with berries or cantaloupe.
As kitties love to play with food, guided by their ancient instincts, these green little balls are not only healthy, but can also be exciting for them. Peas are high vitamin C and A source, which you can keep frozen at home for quick access at any time. Of course, unfreeze it first! It can be mixed with food or given on its own.
In a small extent, hard cheeses can also be great additions to a varied diet. Cheddar, Swiss or Gouda can be a good choice in small amounts grated or diced into the food, but it also makes a great addition to homemade biscuits for cats or snacks.
Another great source of protein, which is also rich in B vitamins. But only give it to your cat cooked to avoid various infections. The easiest way to prepare a hard-boiled egg is to grate it or break it with a fork and mix it into the food.
If your pet is more curious than average, you can give it a whole boiled egg. Of course, this is only under supervision.
Although we have listed all safe foods, the measure and correct dosage must be kept in mind. If you notice that your cat does not like something, do not force it; even if it could in principle be a solution to its digestive or nutritional problems.
